Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative selects two students as local representatives on the 2023 Youth Tour

Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CVEC) is pleased to announce the two students who have been selected to represent CVEC on the 2023 Youth Tour trip in Washington, D.C.

Jordyn Hafer, a sophomore at Albia Community High School, and the daughter of Michelle and Scott Hafer of Albia, has been selected as one of the two outstanding students attending this year’s Youth Tour.  In school, Jordyn is involved in show choir, speech, theater, soccer, swim team and solo and ensemble. She is also involved in 4-H, food club and enjoys volunteering. When asked if given an opportunity to speak with a member of Congress what topic would she like to discuss, Jordyn responded, “I would discuss more funding for the arts. I would also like to discuss women’s rights and climate change.”

Olivia Hathcock, a sophomore at Moravia High School, and the daughter of Ronda and Steve Cink of Albia, has also been selected to attend the 2023 Youth Tour. Olivia is very actively involved in school activities including band, track, cross country, FFA, football and basketball manager, FCCLA and more! Olivia stays busy outside of school by participating in 4-H and church. “I would discuss their plan to help with inflation and the price of gas. I would like to discuss how to prevent broken families and how to keep homeless people off the streets,” stated Olivia if given the opportunity to speak with a congressional representative.

Both will join around 40 other Iowa students – and more than 1,400 high school students from across the U.S. – in Washington, D.C., from June 17-23, 2023.  They will get an inside look at the federal government, tour the city, develop leadership skills, gain a better understanding of electric cooperatives and make friendships that will last beyond the week!

Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative, with the generosity of its membership, is proud to support the Youth Tour program each year as giving back to the communities we serve and investing in the next generation of leaders is part of CVEC’s mission.
